Different Types of Toy Boxes

There are a variety of toy boxes and other storage units available in today’s market. To decide which style is best for your child depends on where the unit will be located and what you are planning to store in it.

The traditional toy boxes are made of wood and have a hinged lid on top. These come in the regular style and the bench style. You can purchase them with any design that you think your child would like. Wooden toy boxes are very durable if you are storing regular toys in your child’s bedroom or some other climate-controlled environment. Your child can get further use out of a wooden model as they grow older and use it for storing other items.

If you are planning to store outside toys or beach toys in your new toy box, you may want to consider purchasing a model made of plastic. These types are also very durable and can be safely stored in a basement or garage where they might run a risk of getting wet. You should also remember that many beach and outside toys may be damp when your child puts them away. The dampness will not harm a plastic toy box at all. A wooden one on the other hand may develop mildew and mold on the inside and end up being ruined.

Another type of toy box is made of cloth material with a plastic or wooden frame. These models come with rounded corners and extra storage pockets in the front where your child can place his favorite toys for easy access. These brands are ideal for smaller children as it is easier to reach the bottom of the toy box by simply pulling the material towards them. However, these boxes also do not do well if they become wet as the cloth can mildew and weaken. Another disadvantage of this style is that it can easily tear if your child puts toys in it that have sharp edges on them. So this toy box may not be ideal for older children.

A storage rack may be a more ideal storage unit than a toy box, especially for small children that may have trouble reaching the bottom of a standard toy chest. Small children also have very little patience when trying to find a toy that they want and will dig everything out of their toy chest during their search. Most storage racks have small bins that are easily accessible to the smallest children and once the bins are organized, a child can usually see the toy that they are looking for. One of the disadvantages of these storage racks is that the child may climb it and can fall very easily. Although these racks are built to be short in height, it is still a good distance for a two-year-old child to fall. Because of this factor, a storage toy rack may be more appropriate for children over four years of age.

There are many styles and models of toy boxes and storage units available. If you take into consideration your child’s age and the type of toys you will be storing as well as the storage location, you should be able to purchase a toy box that is ideal for you and your child.
