Bicycle Safety

Bike riding is a favorite past time in most neighborhoods. Both young and old enjoy going for a bike ride, especially when the weather is nice. And many adults use their bike as a way of getting from place to place. In some countries, the bike is used as the best and only way to get to work, the grocery store or a friend’s house. Sadly, the joys of bicycling are not without its dangers, which is why it is important to teach your kids about bicycle safety.

Statistics

Each year 275,000 children are injured in bicycle related incidents, with more than 600 injured daily due to bicycle related accidents. The rate of injury children experience while on their bicycles is second only to the number of injuries they sustain from automobiles. As bicyclists, children account for about 140 bicycle-related deaths annually. For this reason, bicycle safety should be taken seriously.

Bicycle Safety Checklist

____ Always wear a helmet. Regardless of length of ride or height of bike, a helmet is never an option.
____ Check the gear. It’s vital that the breaks are in good working order and that the tires are properly filled. All nuts, bolts and screws should be checked and tightened regularly.
____ Wear neon. Brightly colored clothing is more noticeable and makes kids visible to drivers. Pant legs should be secured to avoid being caught in the chain while riding.
____ Always wear closed-toed shoes to best protect feet from scraps and other injuries.
____ Ride on the right. Ride with traffic, listen for approaching cars and always follow the rules of the road.
____ Know your hand signals. Use hand signals to let drivers know which direction you’re headed.
